Cosplay Choreography Contest
As MC Susan Gill took the stage took the stage to a packed room,
quiet fell across the excited fans in the audience. The first Japan
C3 Cosplay Choreography Contest was about to begin. Sponsored by the
Japanese Consulate in Boston, the contest was part of a large
selection of programming designed to promote Japan to Anime Boston
attendees.
Dressed as characters from a variety of Japanese games and anime,
seven dancers took the stage to a variety of Japanese pop and rock
songs. Contestants pulled out all the stops, incorporating lip
syncing, air guitar, and various props into their performances. The
audience watched eagerly, clapping along to the beat and cheering for
each cosplayer brave enough to show their stuff on stage.
The judges were volunteers from the Consulate, Honey Blonder and Mr.
Shinto. While they retired to calculate scores, MC Susan presented
the audience with an informational show about visiting Japan on a
budget. Audience members were able to ask questions about hotels and
transportation until the judges returned with the much awaited
announcement.
First place winner was Charmian Christopherson with the song “Drive
Away” by Girl Next Door, second place winner was Julia Balerone with
the song “Go My Way” from the game Idolmaster, and third place was
winner Ariana Wagner with the song “Love and Joy.” Winners were
greeted with another round of applause from the audience, who left the
contest with gift bags supplied by the Japanese Consulate.
